Title: Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS): rehabilitation in an
underserved population
Presenter:
Emily Rich, M.O.T., OTR/L

Topic: Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) impacts between 1-3 million Americans, ranging from 12 - 50 years of age with a 4:1 female to male predominance. Individuals often present with POTS following a viral illness or head injury, or may experience symptoms as a result of another co-morbid condition such as joint hypermobility. These patients are often seen in rehab settings for reasons other than POTS with underlying manifestations complicating their progress, while others are referred primarily for the management of their POTS symptoms. The primary intervention in treatment of POTS is graded, individualized exercise and therapy providers are encountering these patients with increasing frequency. Attendees will learn about the pathophysiology of POTS, common symptoms, current literature for clinical practice, and form an appreciation for the role of therapy in treatment of individuals with POTS.

Presenter Bio: Emily practices as an outpatient occupational therapist at Tucson Medical Center where she has the privilege of serving children, adolescents, and adults in the Tucson Community. Ms. Rich specializes in treating conditions of Dysautonomia, such as POTS, in addition to other chronic conditions. Emily is pursuing her Ph.D. at Texas Woman’s University where she conducts research specific to POTS in rehabilitation.
