Title: Tucson and Beyond: Current Emergency PT Climate

Presenters: Carleen Jogodka PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT & Sarah Nechavl, PT DPT

Topic: This webinar will provide an update on the current emergency physical therapist practice in its birthplace, Tucson, Arizona! We will review what is happening locally, highlight recent national events, discuss growth of this unique but highly beneficial area for PTs to help our patients and the troubled healthcare system. Finally, we will discuss a model used by PTs in Madison, WI to support early access to PTs in their area, and how something similar may work in places around Arizona.

Presenter Bios: 

Carleen Jogodka, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT is a 2004 doctoral graduate of Regis University in Denver, Colorado. Since July of 2004, she has been an emergency care provider at the country’s first full-time emergency department PT program in Tucson, Arizona. She received her Orthopaedic Board Certified Specialist certification in 2007 and through Evidence in Motion, earned Fellowship status with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists in July, 2012. Her work as PT has included clinical research, numerous local and national presentations, clinical and course instruction for multiple universities, co-authored the article, “The Physical Therapist as musculoskeletal specialist in the emergency department”, in Journal of Sports and Orthopaedic Physical Therapy. She has served as a consultant for numerous organizations on a wide variety of aspects related to emergency physical therapist practice. In 2019, Carleen organized the first grassroots conference for Emergency PTs in Denver, CO, with PTs from 18 states and Canada. In addition, Carleen and her business partner co-founded Novus HealthWorks, LLC, who serve to support PTs keep up with this rapidly growing niche area of practice.   

Sarah Nechavl, PT, DPT, graduated from the University of Iowa DPT program in 2006. Since then, she has worked mainly in the acute care setting in SSM St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, WI as well as the University of Wisconsin Hospital as a per diem PT. She started the PT consultation program in the Emergency Department at St. Mary's Hospital in 2010. Sarah has presented at national, state, and local conferences to help increase early access to Physical Therapy. She has also organized a coalition of PTs in the Madison, Wisconsin area to make early access to PT available in all settings.
