President's Report March 2020

Posted: Mar 8, 2020 by Christa Lombardo

Spring into March and Brain Injury Awareness Month!

First off, please allow me to thank the Members of the Arizona Physical Therapy Association who were able to attend PT Day at the Capitol last month. We had an excellent showing, were welcomed by Senator Heather Carter, and had great interaction with State Legislatures from both the House and Senate. A special thanks to our Lobbying group, Dorn Policy Group, for their presence as well as the co-Chairs of our State Governmental Affairs Committee, Cynthia Driskell and Kadeen Mansor, and our Executive Director Christa Lombardo for making this a successful event.

Our top Legislative priority, H.2536 advocating for expansion of Telehealth Services in the State of Arizona, passed the House unanimously and will be heard in the Senate on March 11th. The recent outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an excellent reminder of how Telehealth Services can be valuable for individuals concerned about entering a healthcare facility or who demonstrate signs and symptoms of illness and would like to prevent the spread of infection. Telehealth Services could be a valuable tool allowing these individuals access to care.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month and Wednesday, March 4 was Brain Injury Awareness Day 2020 on Capitol Hill. APTA is advocating in support of the Protecting Student Athletes from Concussions Act (H.R. 5611/S. 2600) on a Federal Level. This bipartisan legislation encourages the development of concussion management guidelines that will strengthen the procedures involving the prevention, identification, and treatment of concussions in elementary and secondary schools. Arizona continues to work with State Legislatures on Concussion Management initiatives.

Student Conclave will be March 28th at A.T. Still University. Registration is live on our website and we are looking forward to supporting our Students and their professional development. There is a fantastic list of Speakers and the Student SIG has done a great job with this event in recent years. Thank you to A.T. Still University for hosting!

Our May 2nd Celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the AzPTA, 50th Anniversary of the PTA, and a special CEU Offering featuring Heidi Jannenga entitled The Roaring 2020s: 7 Rehab Therapy Predictions for the Next Decade. We will conclude with a panel discussion of Arizona Clinicians and Educators including Tim Spooner, Rachel Blackburn, Jim Lynskey, and Kimberly Varnado to discuss specifically how this will impact PT Practice in the State of Arizona! This event will be $25 and includes dinner and 2 CEUs. Registration is available on our website and we need all members to attend this event as we will be holding a business meeting in hopes of approving several important Bylaw changes!

I would encourage all members and non-members and their family and friends to attend the Arizona Diamondbacks game on Friday, June 5th! The Arizona chapter is coordinating an event where the Physical Therapy Profession will be recognized. Discounted reserved seating for this event can be purchased here:

Always wash your hands to maintain good health,
