Letter from our 2020 President Brian Schmitz

Physical Therapist, Physical Therapist Assistant, and Student Members of the Arizona Physical Therapy Association:

My name is Brian Schmitz, and I will be serving as President of the Arizona Physical Therapy Association beginning in January 2020. Please allow me to recognize our Past President, Dr. John Heick, for his contributions to the Association. I cannot thank him enough for his mentorship, guidance, and service to the Association. I believe his Leadership has positioned the Arizona Chapter to reach our full potential in the coming years. Arizona has a long history of strong Leadership, and I would be remiss if I did not recognize the countless members who have served our Association over the past 70 years. Thank you all for your meaningful contributions to our Profession. It is my honor to shepherd the Association into the year 2020 as it marks the beginning of the American Physical Therapy Association’s Centennial Celebrations and the 70th Anniversary of the Arizona Physical Therapy Association. Arizona has been selected to host the House of Delegates and NEXT Conference in June, and the Arizona Chapter will be hosting a Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the PTA and the 70th Anniversary of the AzPTA in May. I look forward to celebrating our past accomplishments with all of you over the upcoming year.

However, I would be inattentive to my duties and responsibilities if I did not remind you that there is still significant work to do on behalf of our Profession. The vision of the AzPTA, to represent and advance Physical Therapy’s role in optimizing the well-being of Arizonans, is no small feat. The Association is committed to promoting the professional development and participation of all members, increasing and promoting public awareness of the value of physical therapy, and contributing to the greater health care environment. I assure you that the Board is working diligently to achieve these goals, but our success is dependent on the support and engagement of all our members. I encourage you to get involved and advocate for your Profession. Please join me in welcoming our new Board Members, Committee Chairs, and Committee members and thank them for their service to our Association. Please let us know how we can better serve your needs, and I invite you all to participate in this year’s Celebrations. There is much to celebrate, much to continue fighting for, and much work to be done in the year ahead. Thank you for the privilege to serve in this capacity, and I look forward to all that we can accomplish together.
